The popularized compound extracted from the hemp plant, also known as CBD, has become well-known for its many health benefits ranging from chronic pain, stress relief, decreased anxiety, and improved sleep. While CBD products are still fairly new to the market, we have compelling research that suggests they can be helpful for stress management, anxiety relief, and improved sleep. Each brand and formula is quite different, so it sometimes takes time to shop around and find out which formula works best for you.

We spoke to nutrition experts and health professionals to find out exactly which CBD products they recommend or use personally. Read on to learn about CBD and some of the top products on the market for stress relief.

What is CBD?

Does CBD have psychoactive effects?

Certain CBDs, like full spectrum, do contain small percentages of THC. However, this variety does not have psychoactive properties, thus it cannot create a high feeling.

However, read your labels carefully. Some CBD brands do carry THC, HHC, or delta-9 varieties that do have psychoactive properties.

Types of CBD

You can take CBD in a variety of forms including gummies, tinctures, and beverages. Brands are now getting savvier and creating multiple lines of products to fit your lifestyle. Nowadays, many brands are including a blend of CBD and different dosing amounts of THC so you will want to check your labels to make sure that you are not purchasing a psychoactive product. Everybody has their own individualized reaction and it’s important to consider how you respond to CBD personally.

You’ll find three types of CBD: Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum, and CBD Isolate.

Full spectrum contains entire plant compounds including around 0.3% THC.
Broad-spectrum does not contain THC and does not have the added benefit of plant compounds.
CBD isolate is the most stable, reliable, and consistent formula.

Dosing recommendations

Many companies sell products ranging from 5 mg to 75 mg per serving. Your personal dose will be individualized and may take some trial and error. Many expert recommendations start at 10 to 25 mg as a starting dose, and you can titrate up from there based on your symptoms.

“It’s best to start with a lower concentration and increase as needed, but ultimately experimenting with different types and concentrations until you find one that works best for you is ideal,” advises Brittnee Cannon, RDN, owner of Your Plant Based Baby in Philadelphia.

The ECS is interconnected with the nervous system, influencing the brain, organs, and nerves throughout the entire body. How to take CBD

Taking a tincture under the tongue (versus eating an edible) not only gives you a faster onset, but it also gives you most of the dosage. Consuming something through your digestive system can take hours to feel the effects and we lose about 50 percent of the dose through digestion, Wightwick offers.
