If you’ve been down the nut butter aisle in the grocery store, noticed peanut butter powder and wondered, “What’s up with that?”, we had the same question. Once you try it, you’ll want to keep it stocked in your pantry at all times.

What is peanut butter powder?

To make regular peanut butter, manufacturers simply grind up peanuts, and they may add additional oils, salt, sweetener, flavorings, or whatever else, depending on the product. To make peanut butter powder, brands like Naked Nutrition start with roasted peanuts and mechanically press them, removing fat and oil.

While we love regular peanut butter (and just about any nut butter – oh, and tahini and other seed butters, too), we now keep a jar of peanut butter powder on hand at all times, too. Here are 5 reasons why.

1. It’s higher in protein

A two-tablespoon serving of regular peanut butter has about 180 calories and 8 grams of protein. If you eat the same 180 calories’ worth of peanut butter powder, you would get 18 grams of protein. Plus, 180 calories’ worth of peanut butter powder is more than 6 tablespoons, so you get to enjoy more peanut butter flavor.

2. It’s lower in fat

Though dietary fats in general aren’t bad for you, and much of the fats in regular peanut butter are heart healthy, depending on your goals, you may look to cut back on some of the fats in your diet. Peanut butter powder has about one-third the fat of regular peanut butter.

3. There are a zillion ways to use it

Once you start using peanut butter powder, you’ll find yourself adding it to everything. Here are a few of our favorite ways to use it:

  • Blend into smoothies
  • Mix with Greek yogurt to make a dip for fruit
  • Sprinkle on top of oatmeal or overnight oats
  • Toss with popcorn (add a little sriracha, too)
  • Add to sauces to thicken and/or lend a bit of sweetness and richness

4. It’s easier to manage portions

Who among us has not measured with our hearts when it comes to peanut butter, and eaten far more than two tablespoons? With peanut butter powder, you usually mix it with other things, rather than eating from the jar, so you’re likely to measure more precisely. Plus, without the creaminess of regular peanut butter, there’s less temptation to overeat.

5. It can swap in for regular peanut butter in a pinch

Though we keep regular and powdered peanut butter on hand, if you run out of the traditional stuff, you can swap in powdered for many applications. Stir some water to reconstitute the powder into a paste, and use it on a sandwich or as a spread for an apple or banana.
