You Don’t Actually Have to Break the Bank for the Best Mattress — Here’s How

I’ve never been exactly great at sleeping. For years, I’d get up in the middle of the night, toss and turn, and have a ton of trouble getting comfortable enough to fall back asleep. This was largely due to just regular sleep issues, but I was also born with slight scoliosis that occasionally causes me some back trouble, so my orthopedic doctor told me that I’m supposed to use a mattress that’s pretty firm — even though I much prefer a mattress that has a soft, plush feel. That’s why my wife and I recently swapped out our old bed for the Emma Original Hybrid Mattress: it’s the best of both worlds.

The Emma is ergonomic and supportive. The individually-wrapped pocket springs provide maximum support to your back and neck, while the comfort layer on top offers a perfect balance between bounciness and body contouring. Basically, it’s my Goldilocks mattress: firm enough to provide serious back support, but soft enough that I still feel cozy and comfortable.

It’s also a major upgrade for my wife Blake, who sometimes sleeps hot, and is very sensitive to temperature changes at night. The Emma is exceptionally cooling, and Blake loves this feature. The graphite-infused premium memory foam really wicks away moisture and disperses heat. The technology they use provides significantly better airflow than memory foam mattresses we’ve used in the past and keeps us a full two degrees cooler every evening so Blake doesn’t end up waking up in the middle of the night.

But most critically, my wife and I chose this mattress brand because it’s really the safest choice for our family. Given that our kids spend at least a third of their lives sprawled out on their beds or ours, we wanted to make sure the mattresses in our home are made out of high-quality materials. Emma’s mattresses are made with CertiPUR foam, which means they meet rigorous standards for emissions, content, performance, and durability, and are made without dangerous chemicals like formaldehyde, mercury, and lead. It also has low volatile organic compound emissions, which improves indoor air quality.

These mattresses are also family-friendly in less-alarming ways that still make a big difference in the quality of our day-to-day life. The motion-absorbing design means that if one of our kids has a nightmare, they can crawl into bed with us and we don’t even have to wake up. It also comes with a washable cover, which we, fortunately, haven’t had to take advantage of yet, but was a serious motivator. Kids are messy: they have accidents, they spill juice cups. You never know where the next mess is going to come from, but you know it’s going to come from somewhere, and it’s nice to know that it won’t be a big deal. We can just toss our mattress cover directly into the wash and the mattress itself won’t be stained.

With all of these great features, you might think that the Emma Original Hybrid Mattress is an unaffordable luxury mattress, but it’s actually a really great option for budget-conscious families, and clocks in at a price that’s considerably lower than others in a similar class. Besides, since we got our new bed, both Blake and I have been falling asleep faster — and actually staying asleep through the night — and you can’t put a price tag on that.

Snag yours before it’s too late! Emma is offering up to 42% off your next mattress order for their Labor Day Sale, ending Sept. 8, 2022.
