I love dairy. Ice cream is my favorite dessert, I start most days with cottage cheese, and I’ve sampled countless cheeses in the name of journalism. But I also happily taste test dairy-free alternatives as well — so in a way, I’m the perfect person to review dairy-free yogurts, since I’m so familiar with all of the options.

During my many visits to the yogurt aisle at the grocery store, I’ve noticed the growing real estate dedicated to plant-based alternatives in single-serving cups and family-style tubs. With so many options for dairy-free yogurts made from everything from oats to nuts to soybeans, it can be hard to know which one to choose. So I sampled some of the most readily available ones from the grocery store to bring you these 5 delicious options.

Whenever possible, I tested unflavored and unsweetened yogurt. Also, all of the yogurts on this list have live and active cultures, so they bring probiotic benefits for your gut health.

1. So Delicious Unsweetened Plain Coconutmilk Yogurt

Full disclosure: I didn’t get a good first impression from So Delicious Unsweetened Plain Coconutmilk Yogurt. But luckily, I stuck with it.

Because of the coconut milk base, I expected it to be rich, thick, and luscious. At first, when I peeled off the tin under the lid, the yogurt appeared watery and thin. Liquid pooled around the edges of the container, and the majority of the yogurt was in a sort of congealed cylinder in the center. When I stirred it, the denser center cracked and looked curdled and lumpy. But I kept stirring, applying some elbow grease, and eventually it came together.

Despite the looks, this yogurt tastes creamier and more well-rounded than some of the other yogurts I sampled. It doesn’t have a strong coconut flavor, but it also isn’t bland, and the emulsified texture gives it a pleasantly round mouthfeel similar to dairy-based yogurt.

PER SERVING (¾ cup): 90 cal, 6g fat (5g saturated fat), 35 mg sodium, 9g carbs (2g fiber, 1g sugar), <1g protein

2. Silk Plain Soymlk Dairy-Free Yogurt

Silk Plain Soymlk Dairy-Free Yogurt was the only soy milk–based yogurt alternative I sampled; Silk also makes almond-based and Greek-style dairy-free yogurts. This version is unflavored but lightly sweetened with cane sugar.

With an off-white, somewhat beige color and a lumpier texture, this yogurt looked quite distinct from the others in my taste test. It was thicker and denser than the more watery coconut-based options I tried, and aside from the lumps, its texture was quite similar to regular dairy yogurt.

The added sugar definitely improves this plain yogurt’s taste. It’s not overly sweet and has a nice tanginess that reminded me of dairy yogurt. If my goal was to dupe someone into thinking a dairy-free yogurt was the real thing, I’d serve them this one.

PER SERVING (¾ cup): 110 cal, 4 g fat (0.5 g saturated fat), 65 mg sodium, 10 g carbs (2 g fiber, 5 g sugar), 7 g protein

3. Forager Project Unsweetened Plain Cashewmilk Yogurt

Forager Project Unsweetened Plain Cashewmilk Yogurt, which gets added richness from coconut cream, had the most uniformly smooth texture without any stirring of all of the dairy-free yogurts I tried. It’s bright white thicker than several of the other yogurts. The only drawback is that it’s a bit overly thickened with cornstarch and locust bean gum, so it’s more gelatinous than I would have liked.

Though it’s unsweetened and unflavored, it has a pleasantly rich, creamy taste, a little tangy and a bit sweet.

PER SERVING (5.3 oz): 120 cal, 9 g fat (2 g saturated fat), 5 mg sodium, 10 g carbs (1 g fiber, 1 g sugar), 3 g protein

4. Siggi’s Plant-Based Coconut Blend, Vanilla & Cinnamon

Siggi’s is known for making Icelandic skyr, which is traditionally thick and dense, similar to Greek yogurt. The brand’s vegan option, Siggi’s Plant-Based Coconut Blend, Vanilla & Cinnamon, is made with cultured coconut milk, pea protein, macadamia nut butter, and coconut oil. The brand doesn’t make an unsweetened dairy-free option, so I tested the vanilla-cinnamon flavor, which is sweetened with cane sugar.

This yogurt is far denser and sturdier than the rest I tried. It has a pudding-like texture that holds its shape when scooped with a spoon, and it’s speckled with black and brown bits from vanilla bean and ground cinnamon.

This is a rich and decadent plant-based yogurt. It’s higher in fat, protein, and calories than most of the others I sampled, and it has an almost dessert-like texture and flavor. The cinnamon comes through in a big way and reminds me of fall baking. It’s sweet but not cloying, and doesn’t have a strong vanilla flavor.

PER SERVING (5.3 oz): 190 cal, 11g fat (7g saturated fat), 90 mg sodium, 12g carbs (<1 g fiber,  9g sugar), 10g protein

5. Cocojune Pure Coconut Yogurt

Rich, fluffy, neutral-tasting, and creamy, Cocojune Pure Coconut Yogurt is my favorite. It’s made with a few simple ingredients: organic coconuts, water, tapioca for thickening, and vegan probiotic cultures.

This yogurt had some separation when first opened, like the other coconut-based options. It easily came together into a cohesive and smooth texture that was fluffy, airy, and similar to regular yogurt.

Cocojune yogurt is incredibly rich and satisfying. It’s not sweet, but you don’t miss the sugar. The yogurt would lend itself well to sweet or savory applications, so you could enjoy it with granola or turn it into a tasty dairy-free tzatziki for dipping. This is a winning all-purpose dairy-free yogurt that will satisfy even dairy lovers like myself.

PER SERVING (4 oz): 190 cal, 18g fat (15g saturated fat), 10 mg sodium, 6g carbs (2g fiber, 2g sugar), 2g protein
