A Radish Grows in Brooklyn

This Williamsburg gem is perfect for seasonal, locally-sourced, picnic-ready meals

In the past two years, Radish has earned a name for itself as Williamsburg’s favorite spot for seasonal prepared foods, picnic necessities (think ready-to-go sandwiches, salads, house-made ginger ale and eco-friendly cutlery) and products from local farms and artisans.

But when the shop’s growing catering business started expanding more quickly than their tiny kitchen could handle, co-owners Amy Marks and Laura DeRemer (former techies-turned-culinary entrepreneurs) started cooking up something bigger.

Their brand new catering kitchen has a 1,500-square-foot banquet hall that the pair plans to rent out and cater for corporate events, weddings and other special occasions. But one night a month they’ll keep it to themselves for a Sunday supper series with room for 75 guests to taste the seasonal, globally inspired efforts of chef Amy Stonionus and her team. “They use these as test kitchens to develop new recipes and master new culinary techniques,” Marks says. “We are always pushing the boundaries of what our catering company can offer.”

Away from the buzz of its sister’s Bedford Avenue, the new space is outfitted with bamboo flooring, globe-like copper light fixtures, hand-painted Mexican tiles, a white marble bar, and—wait for it—chairs! This is Radish’s first opportunity to host customers in a seated environment and the supper series takes full advantage: They recently hosted the first, a six-course Mushroom Forager’s Feast. Their chef brought her culinary team to her Pennsylvania hometown (mushroom capital of the world) for a foraging expedition to highlight the flavors of fall. Each course featured a unique mushroom handpicked from the forest. Think house-made Long Island duck prosciutto with mushroom carpaccio; venison tenderloin over a mushroom latke with local wine, bone marrow jus and shaved asparagus; and chocolate chestnut truffles with truffle broth aroma. A liquor license allows them to pair courses with wine and cocktails. Like the root it’s named for (a different type of radish is always in season, no matter the time of year), menus will be determined by what’s fresh and local.
