It’s no longer strange or unusual to drink less alcohol or to abstain from drinking altogether, and as more and more people have turned Dry January into their everyday lifestyle, a market has emerged for non-alcoholic spirits and other drinks. The more demand there is, the better the substitutes have become, from booze-free wines, to canned mocktails and alcohol-free seltzers made with THC.

When it comes to spirits, there’s now a good non-alcoholic option for just about any taste, from whiskeys, tequilas, and gins to booze-free versions of aperitifs like Campari. Here are 5 of our favorites.

1. Seedlip

Seedlip

Seedlip’s botanical-heavy drinks come in three different blends: citrus, herbal, and aromatic. They’re subtler than the other options on this list, and best served with something that lets their taste shine — like tonic, club soda, or ginger ale. One particular favorite is the herbal spirit, Seedlip Garden 108. It’s meant to taste like a “celebration of the English countryside” and has notes of green pea, hay, rosemary, spearmint, hops, and thyme. It would be an excellent replacement for gin in a Cucumber Collins

2. Ghia

Ghia

This Instagram darling has been around since June 2020, but it’s become one of the most popular non-alcoholic aperitifs on the market. Glossier alum Melanie Masarin created the brand to “change the way we think about drinking and socializing,” and she was inspired by the homemade limoncello her family used to drink during summers spent around the Mediterranean. Made with lemon balm, gentian root, Riesling grapes, fig, rosemary, and yuzu, the drink is deeply herbal, with a delightful citrus kick. Enjoy Ghia by itself, mixed into a drink, or served with a splash of seltzer.

3. Kin

Kin Spritz

Kin markets itself as the world’s first euphoric, which is a “non-alcoholic spirit that appeals to all your senses.” Basically, it’s intended to boost your mood with the help of adaptogens, nootropics, and botanics. Kin currently has a few different offerings, but our favorite is Kin Spritz, a sparkling canned beverage with citrus, orange bitter, hibiscus, and ginger. The brand says the drink can boost energy and focus, as well as vibrancy, thanks to a bit of caffeine as well as rhodiola rosea, GABA, and other add-ins.

4. Lyre’s

Lyre's Italian Orange

If you want a non-alcoholic spirit that mimics the real thing, this is the brand for you. The Australian company has a range of beverages including American Malt, Aperitif Rosso, and Dry London Spirit. But the Italian Orange, a Compari substitute, is the standout. It’s lightly sweet, slightly bitter, and tastes of blood oranges, and it’s perfect with a splash of seltzer and a slice of orange, or in a mock negroni.

5. Curious Elixirs

Curious Elixirs No 2

Each Curious Elixirs carbonated drink is a blend of juices, herbs, adaptogens, and root extracts. Among the creative concoctions, such as No. 1 (pomegranate negroni) and No. 3 (juniper cucumber collins), we especially love No. 2, the spicy pineapple ginger margarita, which is their take on a dark & stormy. The ginger, ancho, and jalapeño make the drink spicy, while the pineapple adds a subtle sweetness. The drink also includes damiana, an herb traditionally used as a relaxant and mood stimulant.
