What is flaxseed meal?

Flaxseed meal is simply ground flaxseeds. Nutrition experts generally recommend the ground form, because  whole flaxseeds may pass through your system undigested, in which case you wouldn’t get the benefits. Rich in both soluble and insoluble fiber, it supports stable blood sugar levels and healthy digestion. Flaxseed meal is also a good source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids and plant-based protein.

How to use it

Now that you know flaxseed’s many benefits, you may be wondering how you can incorporate it into your diet. Here are four creative ways that you can use it for an easy nutrient boost.

  • As a thickener

Smoothie too thin? Throw some flaxseed meal in the blender to bulk it up. It also works in soups, salad dressings, and other liquid-y food for a thicker texture and a hit of fiber.

  • As an egg replacement

Calling all bakers! Flaxseed meal is an excellent egg replacement in various baked goods. Combine it with water, and you create a flax egg, offering a plant-powered alternative that adds a little extra nuttiness to your breads, brownies, cookies, and more. Great in a pinch if you’re baking for a vegan friend, or if you run out of eggs.

  • As a coating

Combine flaxseed meal with your favorite pantry spices, and and use it as a high-fiber substitute for or an addition to breadcrumbs for coating chicken, fish filets, or veggies. Here’s an easy gluten- and grain-free recipe

  • As an easy nutrient booster

Sprinkle it on yogurt, oatmeal, pasta, salads, fold a little to meat or veggie burgers – add it to any dish that could use a hint of nuttiness and more good nutrition.
