3 Things You Might Not Know About Almond Milk

|
June 17, 2019

The alt milk scene has gotten pretty crowded lately, but almond milk has serious staying power. And with good reason! The nut milk has plenty of other nutritional benefits up its sleeve, some of which might just surprise you. Here are three things you may not know about this milk substitute.

1. It’s keto-friendly.

As long as you’re drinking unsweetened almond milk, it’s a low-carb, keto-friendly choice. It also has a low glycemic index, a value assigned to foods based on how quickly or slowly they cause blood sugar to rise. Since almond milk won’t cause your blood sugar to spike, it helps keep energy levels stable and can even lower your risk for diabetes.

2. It’s a good source of healthy fat.

Almonds are a good source of heart-healthy fats, which carries over into almond milk, too. Almond milk contains no saturated fat or dietary cholesterol. Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats keep your heart happy by preventing high blood pressure and heart disease.

3. It’s chock full of Vitamin E.

Almonds are a naturally-rich source of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that’s also important for bone, eye, skin, and brain health. One cup of almond milk contains somewhere between 20% and 50% of your daily needs, depending on whether or not it’s fortified.
