You’re never too old for advice from your mom. Even if it isn’t what we want to hear in the moment that she says it, it’s usually the wisdom that sticks the most.

In honor of Mother’s Day, Clean Plates asked 5 celebrities, “What is the best tip your mom gave you on how to have a healthy, happy life?” Check out their answers below and don’t forget to thank your mom (or mother figure) for all of her healthy advice. And check out Clean Plates just published 50 Moms On A Mission, women who are making a significant difference in the world today.

DRINK WATER

Tamera Mowry-Housley

Actress Tamera Mowry-Housley, co-host of the talk show The Real

“My mom was in the army until I was 11 years old. So I always saw my parents being active. They would always do this program called PT, Physical Training. At 16, my family made a conscious effort to change the way we ate. My mom learned the importance of healthy eating along with us. And as a family, we always tried to stay active. It really wasn’t until the age of 21 when I started to make healthy decisions on my own.The most important tip my mom taught us for good health is to drink lots of water. Water keeps metabolism going, keeps your skin clear, and helps keep your digestive system on track.”

WORK YOUR BRAIN

Mario Batali

Mario Batali, Chef, Restaurateur, Author and Co-Host of The Chew

“My mom’s a powerhouse—always learning, always keeping her mind active, and always moving. She can make hundreds of gnocchi while describing abstract expression in art…that is, after she walked for at least 5 miles.”

EAT YOUR VEGETABLES

Adrienne Moore

Adrienne C. Moore, Actress, Co-Star of Orange Is the New Black

“Growing up, my mom stressed for every dinner to have two features: Sliced tomatoes and green veggies. That cultivated a behavior of always having veggies as a part of dinner.”

LOVE THE WAY YOU MOVE

Elle Macpherson

Elle Macpherson, Model, Co-founder of The WelleCo

“I was always taught the value of moving my body and finding something you love in doing so. I grew up going on waterskiing weekends down the south coast of New South Wales, to a place called Mollymook. It has the most beautiful surf beach and a large natural rock pool known as the Bogey Hole. Those weekends are the reason I love the water and always gravitate toward it. As a mother. I try and encourage this in my boys, too.”

HAVE PROTEIN AT EVERY MEAL

Corinne Olympios

“My mom always taught me to have protein with every meal, whether it’s a little or a lot.”
