It’s time for holiday cheer—and to say “cheers” with a cocktail toast. Though most seasonal drinks are loaded with sugar or artificial flavorings, we’ve found one mixer that you can feel wise about serving: Owl’s Brew. It’s a toxin-free, tea-based blend of whole spices, fruits and herbs!
Co-founders Maria Littlefield and Jennie Ripps, who also own custom tea-blending company Brew Lab Tea, launched Owl’s Brew five months ago. Says Ripps, “We were really frustrated with what we were drinking. We were either out having something really boring, like a vodka and soda, or a cocktail that took 10 minutes to make and had a lot of sugars. Then we started subbing in teas to certain cocktails. We played with them until we came up with blends that really taste good when they’re mixed with spirits. So you could do a black tea with all sorts of spices already in the tea, and you could get very simple, fresh cocktails”—without any synthetic flavorings.
Owl’s Brew mixers, which come in three varieties—”Classic” English Breakfast, “Pink & Black” fruit-flavored Darjeeling, and chai-spiced “Coco-Lada”—contain only a ninth of the caffeine in a cup of coffee, and are made with antioxidant-rich, blended tea, purified water and organic agave.
- 2 parts Owl’s Brew The Classic (see note)
- 1 part whiskey
- organic apple slices
- Combine all ingredients in a saucepan, and heat until desired temperature. Do not boil. Pour into a mug and garnish with a cinnamon stick.
