5 Healthy Pancake Mixes to Get Your Flapjack On

Pancake mixes

September 20, 2020

Who doesn’t wake up on a Sunday morning wanting pancakes? But making them from scratch is sometimes too much to ask of us on a weekend morning. Plus, if the craving hits during the week, there’s zero time in our busy mornings for measuring out pancake ingredients.

Enter mixes. They’re super-convenient, of course—and now there are plenty of healthy options as well. Some feature whole grains, others skip it all together in favor of gluten- and grain-free flours like cassava and coconut. What they all have in common —they’re all made with wholesome ingredients, so no hydrogenated oils, no fillers, no artificial colors or preservatives. Here are some of our favorites.

Arrowhead Mills

Arrowhead Mills Organic Sprouted Grain Pancake & Waffle Mix

Made with whole-grain sprouted wheat, barley and corn, this simple mix gives you fiber and protein in the form of fluffy pancakes. Sprouted grains can be easier to digest and more nutrient rich, #winwin. Stir in a bit of water and oil and you’re good to go.

Birch Benders

Birch Benders Paleo Pancake Mixes

Birch Benders makes regular pancake mixes as well as the grain-free kind, and they’re all good. But we’re basically obsessed with the Paleo varieties (they have plain, pumpkin spice and banana) because they’re so easy (just add water!) and have amazing texture, not gritty or gummy like some Paleo cakes we’ve made. The mix of cassava, coconut flour and almond flour, plus monk fruit for sweetness, is magical. (They have a keto mix coming out in January that we can’t wait to try.)

Bob's Red Mill

Bob’s Red Mill Buckwheat Pancake Mix

Buckwheat gives pancakes a super-tasty, nutty flavor, as well as tons of nutrients and fiber. Pancakes are our all-time favorite way to enjoy it. Add an egg, a little oil and some milk and get ready to “flip out” at how good these are (sorry).

Kodiak Cakes

Kodiak Cakes

This Park City, Utah-based company offers so many awesome flavors of pancake mix, we simply couldn’t decide which one to feature here. Buttermilk & Chia? Pumpkin & Flax? Peanut Butter? Rocky Mountain Oat (also gluten free!)? Chocolate Chip? They’re all whole grain, all have a minimum of 8g protein (up to 14 for some), all are crazy-easy to make (add water). Plus, a portion of all sales goes to wildlife conservation efforts.

Simple Mills

Simple Mills Pancake & Waffle Mix

They already make our fave grain-free crackers, so it’s no surprise that Simple Mills is crushing the pancake game. It has just 8 ingredients (almond flour, arrowroot, coconut sugar, coconut flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and sea salt), it’s GMO free and Paleo friendly—and did we mention that the cakes taste awesome?
