7 Gluten-Free Items that are Great for You

|
September 13, 2013
With so many gluten-free options on the shelves these days, it's hard to know which brands to trust. Clean Plates has taken the guessing out of shopping for wheat and gluten-free breads, doughs, and mixes.

If you’re one of the folks who can’t tolerate gluten or are experimenting with eating less of it, we’ve got news. The good: there are more gluten-free products out there than ever. The not-so-good: lots of them are loaded with preservatives and unhealthy ingredients. So we’ve rounded up some of the best g-free items money can buy, and that your body will love!

Breads: Manna Organics

This Illinois company offers five organic, non-GMO choices, including sprouted “Ciao Chia,” Cinnamon Raisin and “Ancient Grains” with millet, amaranth and sunflower seeds. The main ingredients are brown rice and sorghum flour, and unlike many brands, Manna uses sunflower oil instead of canola and no maltodextrin, mono- or diglycerides.

Food for Life Red Rice Bread

and

Black Rice Bread

Feeling adventuresome? High-nutrient Bhutanese red rice turns pinkish from minerals in the soil where it’s grown, and black rice is known for its anthocyanins—dark-colored antioxidant compounds.

Pizza crusts: Toovaloo

All organic and made with brown rice, amaranth, tapioca flours and flaxseed meal, this crust also contains olive oil (not canola or soy), and was chosen as one of VegNews’ favorites.

Gluten Free Bistro

This Boulder-made crust is non-GMO and contains whole grain brown rice, sorghum, tapioca, buckwheat and coconut flours, plus a touch of applesauce, olive oil…and garlic salt for Italian flair.

English muffin: Food For Life

The brand’s Multi-Seed Gluten-Free English Muffins are made with organic brown rice and tapioca flours, plus a blend of flax, chia, sesame and sunflower seeds.

Cookie: Purely Elizabeth Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix

You will have to turn on your oven, but the cookies this mix makes are worth it! With organic millet and almond flours, garbanzo bean flour, vegan chocolate chips, chia seeds and coconut sugar, each mix yields two dozen. Our in-house nutritional advisor calls them “the best on the market.”

Feel (g-) free.
